Jason Statham, who is a staple of today’s action movies, will be in this blog quite a bit.  He’s already in 3 other posts, driving 3 other cars: MINI Cooper S in The Italian Job, Audi A8L in Transporter 3, and a Ford Mustang GT in Death Race.

In Cellular, it wasn’t any car that Jason Statham drove that caught my attention.  It was the Bronco that Chris Evan drove in the beginning.  A 1969 Ford Bronco Sport.  The SUV stood out because it reminded me of an afternoon ride, along time ago, up and down PCH with a friend’s older cousin.  We were still too young to drive, so we had a blast.  His cousin took us to Venice Beach and it was all a good time.  I don’t know exactly what year Bronco it was, but the color was similar and the build (half-cab configuration?).

Other than that afternoon, the only other impression I have of  Ford Broncos was OJ’s white Bronco in the famous (infamous) freeway chase.

But the Bronco is good on its own merit.  First introduced in 1965 to compete with Jeeps in the recreational vehicle market.  It was an immediate hit.  Perhaps because of the rugged and tough vibe it projected.  A no frills, simply basic, and functional off-road truck.  It’s boxy.  High fenders.  Square hood.  It looked tough while simply parked.

Initial models were powered by a 105 horsepower inline 6 cylinder engine.  By 1969, it was using a 302 cubic inch V8.  It came available with a Sport Package, just like the one used in the movie.  With this edition, among others, came grille bumpers and front guards.  19,200 Broncos were made in 1969.
