$2750 towards a new 2009 Pontiac G6: Worth it?

I received a letter over the weekend from GM.  It’s the form letter to their customers on GM’s current bankruptcy  proceedings.  It mentioned that GM is seeking buyers for Saturn and Saab.  Also, the letter stated that they just sold the HUMMER brand.  And it also included the phasing out of the Pontiac brand.  So no more GTOs.  No more Firebirds.  And no more Grand Ams.

The letter also included the GM Owner Appreciation Cash Certificate offering cash incentives towards the purchase of a new GM car from a selection.  Curious thing — some Pontiacs were part of the selection.  The incentives for Pontiacs went as follows:

- $2,750 towards a 2009 Pontiac G6
- $2,500 towards a Pontiac G8
- $2,000 towards a Potiac G3, G5, G6 (2009.5), Solstice, Torrent, or a Vibe

I thought the Pontiac brand was being phased out.  Only the Vibe was announced as the sole lineup for 2010. So why would anyone wanna buy a Pontiac right now?

That’s too bad.  If my choices were limited to only the above, I’d go for a G6 convertible.  It fits my style.  Although, I’m not sure how Pontiacs are when it comes to reliability.  It’s been awhile since I paid attention to them since a friend of mine traded in his Grand Am for a Toyota pickup over 10 years ago.

Although, if I were to buy Pontiacs for car collection, I’d begin with the GTOs and the Trans Ams.  Those cars will be prized possessions, if not already.
